Having taken a break from exhibiting, London based artist Darren John is back with a brand new presentation and his debut show in Portugal with Stacks at Circus Network Gallery Porto.

Darren is best known for his colourful, bold and creative approaches to image making. On show at Circus are the first paintings from Darren’s STACKS/Flags of Us series.

“.. But these are black and white?!” we’ll hear you say. Well in the first UK Lockdown in 2020, with limited access to his studio, Darren was stuck housebound with only a few art materials and the items around the home to work with.

It was here that Creativity Under Quarantine was born. A 26 part creative painting and video series which quickly became a hugely successful resource in schools, higher education and people from all walks of life and creative ability. The series shared that if we view what surrounds us through a more playful lens, we can engage with our worlds in totally new and exciting ways.

“When we re-imagine our surroundings, we open doors to new thoughts and creative opportunities. Integrating this mindset into our every-day lives can enrich our worlds for the better, and hopefully this project will inspire others to do the same.” - Darren John 2020

As the world began to re-open, it was only a matter of time before he was invited to host workshops based on this lockdown series and these unseen paintings are works he produced in the development of these sessions.

Darren believes the creative act is something we should all engage with and that the making of art is not designated only for those who consider themselves as ‘Artists’. The kind of image making he promotes, champions an inclusivity in art that we are all invited to be a part of.

“As children we dance without knowing the moves, we make music without knowing the notes and we draw enthusiastically and without overthinking. We do it because it feels great! And I believe we should keep doing it!”
